In the ‘Formation Face’ series by Bosnian artist Mitar Simikić each photograph captures a shot of a person’s face obscured by graffiti.
“Popular culture is not consumption, but a culture – an active process of creating and conveying meaning and satisfaction within a given social system. Culture is alive, active prosces: it can be developed only from the inside, can not be imposed from outside or from the top down. Homogeneous, real foreign culture, can not be sold over the masses: culture simply does not work that way. Nor do people act and live as mass gatherings as stolen, only one-dimensional person whose consciousness is false consciousness, whose only relationship to the system that enslaves them unconscious attitude or even deliberately fraudulent. Popular culture created by people, it does not produce the culture industry.”
